Journey through John 7:1-10

Good Morning Church Family – Journey Through John

Read John 7:1-10

Devo Thought: Have you ever showed up to a meeting thinking that the agenda was going to be focused on one particular issue and the meeting turns out to be about something completely unrelated? If you’ve ever been a part of an organization of any size, you’ve probably been in that meeting. I remember one year when I was working for a local school district, and we had our annual convocation event. The event usually consisted of some encouraging words, some reminders about our “why,” and some challenges for the new year ahead. Well, this particular year the district decided to add an element of safety training. This safety training involved what to do during a situation when someone showed up to harm the kids. What was interesting (disturbing?) about the training was that the district had one idea about how the training would go and the presenter had another idea. Both had very different agendas, which ultimately left the teachers present scratching our heads and feeling a little distressed. We find a similar situation in our passage today. There are two different agendas at play here. The brothers of Jesus, who had seen their brother do some amazing things but had likely mistaken the purpose of those things, are trying to get Jesus to go the Feast of Booths in an open and public way to reveal that he was the Messiah. This is why Jesus responded that it wasn’t his hour yet. Their agenda didn’t line up with the agenda of Jesus. How often does our agenda not line up with the agenda of Jesus? If our agenda is different than the agenda of Jesus, we have to realize that he has a perfect plan, and we must bring ourselves into alignment with him, not the other way around.

Let us ask God to reveal plans where our agenda isn’t aligned with His agenda.
