Journey through John 3:9-15

Good Morning Church Family – Journey Through John

Read John 3:9-15

Devo Thought: There is a term that is used in the music industry called sampling. Sampling is when someone uses a section of audio from another already existing song and reworks it to create a new song. Sometimes a musician will take a short beat or section of lyrics and work it into a new song that pays homage to the old song while creating something new. In his conversation with Nicodemus, Jesus is doing something that is like sampling. He is referencing multiple passages in the Old Testament and, instead of reworking them, he is trying to help Nicodemus see their truth meaning. He is masterfully weaving these texts together to reveal His true identity to Nicodemus. In the last passage we looked at, He makes reference to Ezekiel 36 and 37 to show Nicodemus that He is fulfilling God’s promise to bring about a new birth with new hearts and a pouring out of the Spirit. In today’s passage, Jesus is again sampling from the Old Testament to show Nicodemus who He is. In verse He makes a reference to Proverbs 30:4, which says, “Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name?” Jesus, by saying “No one has ascended to heaven except he who descended from heaven,” is telling Nicodemus that it is Me. I am the One who has ascended and descended. I’m the answer to the question. I’m the key to the whole thing. Read the Scriptures and you’ll find me there if you really want to see me.

Let us pray and ask God to help us see Jesus in all of the Bible.
