Journey through John 5:1-8

Good Morning Church Family – Journey Through John

Read John 5:1-8a

Devo Thought: Yesterday, I talked about sifting mechanisms. It is this thing that Jesus does to help people come to a point of decision about whether or not they really want what He’s offering. As I’ve walked with my sons through youth sports, these sifting mechanisms pop up from time to time. You have a moment when things get really hard, and you have to decide whether or not to keep going or to quit. I remember a couple of years ago my youngest son, Micah, started the spring baseball 0-10 with 9 strikeouts. It was brutal. On the ride home after that ninth strikeout, he looked at me and said that he wanted me to get him some extra help. I had offered before and he had said no. That day, things changed. He started getting extra help and asking me to go and hit with him the day before each tournament (he was probably hitting four times a week between regular practice, extra lessons, and time with me). All of the sudden, things changed dramatically for him at the plate. He finished the season hitting over .400 and had several home runs. He came to a point of decision and decided that he wanted help. He decided that he didn’t want to quit. In our passage today, we see something similar. Jesus meets a man who had been an invalid for 38 years and had been waiting to be healed for a long time. So, Jesus asks him a question (sifting mechanism). “Do you want to be healed?” The answer seems obvious, but I don’t think it was because the man makes an excuse. He didn’t yet know who Jesus was and didn’t know the offer in front of him. So, Jesus brings him to a point of decision again. “Get up, take your bed, and walk,” He says. The man had to decide in that moment whether he wanted what Jesus just offered or not. The man responded in faith and got up and walked. When Jesus asks you if you want help, what will you say?

Let us ask God to help us respond in faith when He offers us help.
