Journey through John 3:16-18

Good Morning Church Family – Journey Through John

Read John 3:16-18

Devo Thought: At times in my life, especially when I was younger, I suffered from a faulty theology. Do you remember reading “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God?” I had to read it when I was in 11th grade. That’s the year you take American Lit because that’s the year you take US History. The two are supposed to coincide, so that you can see the parallels between the two. Well, early in the year, we had to read Jonathan Edwards’ sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” The sermon made quite an impression on me. Edwards used pretty vivid imagery to depict God and His wrath toward sin and sinners. While much of what Edwards says about God’s wrath toward sin is true and scriptural, my immaturity led me to twist the truth into lies about how God felt about me. It caused me to lose the full picture of who God is. The enemy would have us twist the truth about God to keep us from trusting Him. John 3:16-18 is a remedy to this danger. In these three short (but well-known) verses, we get a clear picture of who God is and why Jesus came. We find out that God loves us. He loves us so much that He couldn’t leave us in our sin, so He sent Jesus. Sin was such a problem that Jesus had to deal with it. But God isn’t just waiting to get us. That’s the whole reason, Jesus came. God didn’t want us to perish. He didn’t send Jesus into the world to condemn us. Instead, Jesus came to save us. However, if we refuse to believe in Jesus, there are real consequences. We will be condemned if we don’t trust Him. If God really just wanted to condemn us, if He was really just waiting to get us, then He wouldn’t have sent Jesus. But He did send Jesus, and that’s how we know what God thinks about us.

Let us thank God for sending Jesus so that we could have eternal life.
