Journey through John 5:17-30

Good Morning Church Family – Journey Through John

Read John 5:17-30

Devo Thought: What we are going to look at for the next couple of days in John’s Gospel is a turning point in some ways. Moving forward the Jewish leadership no longer just see Jesus as someone who makes them uncomfortable but as a threat. They no longer want to silence him; they want to kill him. Yes, it angers them that “he breaks the Sabbath,” but what drives them to want to kill him is “he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.” Jesus doesn’t deny this. In fact, he explains why they are right about their claims against him. He basically tells them that he is only doing things as his Father does them. “I’ve seen my dad do it this way, so I do it this way too.” Have you ever seen someone who is the spitting image of his dad? If you’ve ever met my brother-in-law, you will know what I am talking about. He looks like a younger version of my father-in-law. More than that, when you hear him talk, he sounds like my father-in-law. To take it one step further, he even has many of the same mannerisms as my father-in-law. To see and hear my brother-in-law is to see and hear my father-in-law. It is uncanny how much they are alike. This is the essence of what Jesus says in response to the Jewish leadership’s accusations against him. “For whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise…For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he wills.” Jesus does whatever the Father tells him to do; Jesus does whatever he sees the Father do; therefore, when we see Jesus, we see the Father. If you’ve ever wondered how the Father feels about you, look at Jesus. If you’ve ever wondered what the Father is really like, look at Jesus. He is his Father’s Son.

Let us thank God the Father that He has revealed Himself in the Son.
