Journey through John 6:1-6

Good Morning Church Family – Journey Through John

Read John 6:1-6

Devo Thought: In this passage, we see a miracle that’s recorded and every single one of the gospel accounts. This means it was really important to the ministry of Jesus and made a huge impression on the disciples and writers of the Gospels. There are a couple of details in John’s account that I think are interesting. First, we know exactly why a large crowd was following Jesus and the disciples around. He had been doing signs on the sick, and the people wanted to see and experience more of this. To me, though, the more interesting detail is the interaction between Jesus and Philip. Jesus looks up and sees the people coming and knew that they had a great need. They were going to be hungry. So, instead of telling Philip this is what we are going to do, he asks Philip a question. “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?” What a loaded question. I can only imagine what Philip is thinking in this moment. Are you kidding me, Jesus? Don’t you see how many people there are? Again, I can almost see the smile playing across Jesus’ face. He knew what he was going to do, and we will get to that in due time. Before that, I want to consider that question, “Where are we to buy bread?” In essence, it’s the question, “What are we going to do?” Can you think of times in your life where something happened and you are staring at that thing coming right at you and you can almost feel God asking you the question, “What are we going to do?” Jesus asks the question to push us into faith. He knows what is going to happen and what he will do, but he wants us to understand that he’s the only one who can really do anything about it at all. If you are dealing with a mountain of a situation and you’re looking at God and it feels like He is asking you, “What are we going to do,” don’t worry because He has an answer and He always will.

Let us ask God to help us to respond to Him in faith.
