30-Day Personal Devotion Challenge Day 15

Good Morning Church Family – Day 15

Read Colossians 2:20-23

Devo Thought: Have you ever heard of the term “poser”? A poser is someone who wants everyone to think that they are really something that they are not. A poser dresses the part, talks in a way that sounds good, but upon further investigation, there is clearly something amiss. When I attended Mississippi State, I would regularly go to the Sanderson Center (the big fitness facility on campus) to play basketball. There was a guy who would come in the gym from time to time. The moment he walked in the door, you thought this guy is legit. He had the look of a basketball player. He had the right clothes, the right shoes, everything. Then he started to play. He was a poser. He couldn’t play at all. I’m not trying to be critical of this guy. I’m just stating the reality. This is what came to mind when Paul uses the phrase “These (regulations) have indeed an appearance of wisdom…but they are of no value….” While Paul is talking about “regulations” (practices), I want to take note of the fact that these practices were being promoted by someone. It is so important for us as believers to listen carefully to those who teach us and preach to us. Are they promoting practices that are really “posers” of self-made religion, or are they prompting us to put faith in the One who empowers us to experience real transformation? Do we know the Word well enough to know when posers are present? Be watchful, church family. Watch out for teachings that have an appearance of wisdom but have no value.

Prayer – Let us pray for wisdom and discernment to identify and reject posers and say yes to the power of Jesus.
