Journey through John 1:49-51

Good Morning Church Family – Journey Through John

Read John 1:49-51

Devo Thought: Have you ever had a moment in your life where you made a discovery or learned something new that opened a whole other world for you? This is what happened to Nathanael, who we met last time. Full of skepticism, he is introduced to Jesus. Jesus “sees him” in a way nobody ever has, and Nathanael is blown away. Just because Jesus saw him under the fig tree, Nathanael proclaims that Jesus is “son of God…the King of Israel!” Jesus responds and says basically that you ain’t seen nothing yet. He tells him that a whole new world is going to open up to him. “You will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” In other words, Jesus is the bridge between heaven and earth, the restoration of Eden. Because Nathanael was seen under a fig tree, there is a whole new world opened for him, a way to understand all of the world around him. C.S. Lewis once wrote, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” In seeing Jesus, Nathanael will be able to see everything else because Jesus is the light of the world. As we saw at the beginning of this first chapter, Jesus brought light to a dark world. Now, we have Nathanael really being able to see for the first time in the light of Jesus. This is an invitation for us as well. Everything in the world becomes clearer in the perspective and light that Jesus gives us. Will we come and see? Will we believe in small things only to have a whole new world opened to us?

Let us pray and ask God to help us to believe and see Jesus and by seeing him, see everything else as well.
