Journey through John 3:1-2

Good Morning Church Family – Journey Through John

Read John 3:1-2

Devo Thought: Early in John’s Gospel, we learn that Jesus is the “light that shines in the darkness, and the darkness does not overcome it.” There are two ideas I want us to home in on. First, Jesus is the light of the world, and it is not without irony that Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews, a teacher in Israel, came to Jesus at night. You see, Nicodemus was a man who was in the dark though he would have thought that he was in the light. He came at night because he knew that Jesus was a controversial man, and that his fellow rulers would not have agreed with him going to see Jesus. What we see here in this passage is Nicodemus is coming out of the darkness and into the light. Now, I want to slow down before we get to the conversation between Nicodemus and Jesus. Some translations of the passage above say “the darkness does not comprehend it” rather than the “darkness does not overcome it.” The Greek word used has a wide enough range of meaning to encompass both words. The question I want us to consider today and the next couple of days is, does Nicodemus comprehend what Jesus is saying? Has he come to the light from the darkness to understand Jesus, or has he come to Jesus to try to overcome Him? When we come to Jesus, do we come to submit to him and his ways? Do we come to understand and believe Him? Or do we come to question and doubt Him so that we can have our own ways? Let’s be curious about Nicodemus for the next couple of days as we investigate his conversation with Jesus. Let’s be curious about ourselves.

Let us pray that we would come out of the darkness and into the light of Jesus and then that we would submit to Him and His ways.
