Journey through John 6:41-46

Good Morning Church Family – Journey Through John

Read John 6:41-46

Devo Thought: Where are you from? This is a pretty important question. The answer to this question tends to lead people to assume lots of things about you. Depending on how you answer this question, people may assume that you grew up rich or poor, you have a little or a lot of education, you are conservative or liberal, you have an open or closed mind, you wear shoes or you don’t (welcome to people assuming all sorts of things about you because you are from Mississippi). Your place of origin shapes you and the way you think about the world around you. Moreover, it shapes the way people think about you. Jesus was no different in this regard. In our passage today, the people he is speaking to make some pretty big assumptions about him because they thought they knew where he was from. In response to Jesus claiming to be the bread from heaven, they ask themselves, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know?” There are a lot of assumptions built into their thinking. They are assuming that Jesus is the product of an out-of-wedlock pregnancy (maybe worse than that). They are assuming that Jesus simply a carpenter and a carpenter’s son, who wasn’t anything special. They are using Jesus’ assumed place of origin as a reason to disbelieve him. Jesus explains to them that they don’t really know where he is from because they don’t know who he came from. If they had known his Father, they would realize who he is and that what he is saying is true. Jesus’ place of origin matters because it makes all that he says true and all that he does good and right. Where was he from? He was sent by the Father from heaven to seek and save us.

Let us thank God for sending us Jesus.
