Journey through John 1:35-39

Good Morning Church Family – Journey Through John

Read John 1:35-39

Devo Thought: The French philosopher Voltaire once said, “Judge a man by his questions rather than his answers.” In Greek philosophy, Socrates used a method of asking thoughtful questions as the way to uncover the truth. This method, when done well, is an incredible teaching technique. It allows the teacher to help the student think through and refine or discard their ideas. Jesus, as the world’s wisest teacher, was a master at asking the right questions at the right time. This passage is an example of asking the right question at the right time. At the beginning of the passage, we are introduced to two of John the Baptist’s disciples, who hear John say of Jesus, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” Intrigued, these two disciples leave John and start following Jesus. After seeing these two men following him, Jesus turns and asks them an important question, “What are you seeking?” Why is this an important question? It forces these two new disciples to think about what they want from Jesus. Essentially, Jesus is asking them to consider what they hope for. I think it’s a question we should all ask ourselves as we follow Jesus. What are we seeking? What do we want from him? We know from the various Gospel accounts that the disciples often misunderstood why Jesus had come. They didn’t really start to figure things out until Jesus died and was resurrected. Even in this moment, they didn’t want to reveal their motives, but it isn’t until we are honest about why we are following Jesus that we can really begin to be discipled in His way. So, what are you seeking?

Let us pray about having a heart that is honest with God about why we want Him and ask Him to change us to have the right motives in following Him.
