30-Day Personal Devotion Challenge Day 6

Good Morning Church Family – Day 6

Read Colossians 1:15-20

Devo Thought: There is a very technical term that is used in Christian theology. It is the word Christology. Christology is the study of the Messiah. This means study to understand who the Messiah is and what it means to be the Messiah. This passage in Colossians is one of the most important texts in the New Testament for Christology. The Apostle Paul uses these sentences to detail who Jesus is and what that means for us and for the world. So, what exactly does Paul say about Jesus? First, he makes it clear that Jesus is the image (literally the mirror image) of the invisible God. This means when you see Jesus and hear his teaching and experience his work you are seeing the Creator God of the universe. First John 1 makes the same point: “That which was from the beginning, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and touched with our hands…the life was made manifest, and we have seen it.” This alone is incredible, that the Messiah would clearly show us the heart of God the Creator. Second, Paul makes it clear that Jesus holds a place of preeminence. This means he holds a place of authority. Paul says that he was the firstborn of all creation. This is a reference, not to birth order, but to position. The firstborn is the one who inherits from the Father. Paul reinforces this idea by saying that all things were created by Him, through Him, and for Him. More than that, He is the head of the Church because He was the firstborn from the dead. Finally, He is not simply the creator of all things; He is the one who saves all things. Fully man and fully God, He makes all things right and makes peace by the blood of the cross. He is first in all things. Is He first in your life?

Prayer – Let us adore Jesus as the one who is first in all things
