Journey through John 4:31-38

Good Morning Church Family – Journey Through John

Read John 4:31-38

Devo Thought: Food is pretty important. Just having it is necessary to continue living. Food is what gives us energy for the day. It provides what our bodies need to function, to repair and heal itself, and to accomplish our goals. The disciples knew this, and so they tell Jesus that He needs to eat in our passage today. “Rabbi, eat.” I love Jesus’ response to them. “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” I can see a slight smile on the face of Jesus as confusion registers on the face of the disciples. They are thinking to themselves, does He have food hidden away somewhere that we don’t know about? Do someone else bring Him food while we were away? Jesus seizes on their confusion to help them make a connection. Just as physical food is our fuel for physical living, spiritual food (a connection with the Father) is our fuel for real life. “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.” The Father has given me work, he says, and that is my fuel for living. What is the work? There is a harvest coming. In the context of our passage, He letting them know that the Samaritans from the village of the woman at the well are coming. They have heard about Him, and many of them will believe in Him. In other words, Jesus is telling them to prepare to reap for what He had already labored for. He had done the work; He had led the woman to belief, now she was telling. He labored, she labored, and the disciples were going to reap and to enjoy the harvest. This is the same thing today. Jesus is working; it is our job to reap. Is this our fuel for living? Is this our food for life? Physical food won’t last, but spiritual food lasts forever.

Let us ask God to help us to see the harvest fields and to reap where He has sown.
