Journey through John 1:19-28

Good Morning Church Family – Journey Through John

Read John 1:19-28

Devo Thought: Who are you? What a powerful question. Do you know how you would answer it? This is the question John the Baptist is faced with from the priests and Levites (the religious elites). This is a question about identity. This is a question about how John fits into God’s plan for the world. John knew that they were trying to ask if he was the Messiah, to which he responded unmistakably that he was not the Messiah. From there, they continued to question him about his place in God’s plan. He eventually helped them to see that he was the one who was supposed to point to the One. It was his job to help others see that Jesus was the Messiah. What’s interesting to me about all this is that sometimes we fall into the trap of believing that we don’t really matter to God’s plan because we aren’t the main character. What if John the Baptist had decided that he didn’t really matter because he wasn’t the Messiah? What if he had thrown up his hands in frustration because God said to him that he was a side character who was supposed to highlight the main character? Just because you aren’t the main character in God’s story, that doesn’t mean that you don’t matter to God’s plan. You see, John had an important part of play in God’s unfolding redemption plan. “He was the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord.’” We aren’t the Messiah; we, like John, aren’t even worthy to untie the strap of his sandal. But, we can be the one who points someone else to the One. It’s about knowing who we are, and being secure in the fact that we matter to God’s plan. Who are you? You are valued possession of God who is a witness to the One who purchased you.

Let us thank God that He has made us a part of the His plan to save the world through His Son.
