Journey through John 2:1-12

Good Morning Church Family – Journey Through John

Read John 2:1-12

Devo Thought: Here in this passage, we have the record of the very first of Jesus’ miracles in John’s Gospel. He turns the water into wine and saves the wedding host from a major social faux pau. In John’s Gospel, miracles are almost always called signs. What’s the point of a sign? As you drove to work this morning or the grocery store, you likely passed a number of signs. Some signs give you information (the speed limit or a road number). However, the vast majority of signs help with direction. Signs in John’s Gospel are designed to do both. They provide vital information and clear direction. So, what about this sign? Jesus never just does a miracle for the sake of doing it. There is always a point, or rather the miracle is always pointing to something. So, what does this seemingly insignificant miracle point to? In his book Miracles, C. S. Lewis makes the point that this miracle is about God doing what God always does, just faster. He explains that God is the one who created and designed the vine from which we get wine. He designed it to draw water from the ground and grow and mature into a plant that can then be used to make wine. What Jesus did was “short cut” the system. He took the water and made it do what would eventually do, just as He had created it to do. In doing this, Jesus is pointing to the fact that He is in fact that the Creator. The vine and water exist because He created it. They do what they do because He created them that way. The sign tells us that “All things were made through Him.” His disciples saw this and believed in him. This is always the point of the signs: information and direction. Jesus is Creator; believe in Him.

Let us pray that God would help us to read about the signs of Jesus so that we would know who He is and believe in Him.
