Journey through John 1:6-8

Good Morning Church Family – Journey Through John

Read John 1:6-8

Devo Thought: In this section of John, we learn more about John the Baptist. We are told that he was simply a witness to the light, but that he himself was not the light. As we work our way through the first chapter of John, this becomes more and more apparent. This made me think about what it is exactly that makes a good witness. This is part of a list from The Marquette County Prosecutors Office in Marquette, Michigan. Let’s see where John stacks up as a witness:
  1. A good witness tells the truth. This means that the witness simply tells what they have seen and heard. It is not an interpretation of the facts. It is merely the facts. John definitely scores on this account.
  2. A good witness has a neat appearance. Well, John certainly had an interesting appearance. He dressed in camel hair and ate locust and honey. So, maybe not neat.
  3. A good witness avoids distracting mannerisms, such as chewing gum. We have no record of John the Baptist displaying any distracting mannerisms.
  4. A good witness speaks loudly and clearly so everyone in the courtroom can hear him. We know that people from all over were coming to hear John the Baptist’s message, and that people wanted to know more about what he had to say.

The point is this. John was a witness. It was his job to tell people about Jesus, not to be Jesus for people. That’s our job as well. God hasn’t asked us to save anyone. He’s asked us to share with someone.

Let us pray for our faithfulness to witness about Jesus.
