Journey through John 1:40-42

Good Morning Church Family – Journey Through John

Read John 1:40-42

Devo Thought: When you get really important news, who do you call, text, or track down to tell? If you found out today that you had discovered the cure to cancer, who are you calling? If you met your favorite athlete or celebrity or Christian writer, who is the first person you are sharing the news with? In this short passage today, we find out who one of the two disciples were who left John the Baptist to follow Jesus. His name was Andrew. What do we know about Andrew? His name means “manly”, and we know his profession was a manly one, namely he was a fisherman. We know that he wasn’t mentioned much in New Testament, only 12 times (4 of which were in the lists of the disciples). We know, from church history, that he went on to be a missionary to various countries around the Mediterranean world. We also know who he went to tell first the news that “we have found the Messiah.” He went to tell his brother, a man known as Simon Peter. We know Peter as one of the key disciples of Jesus, and one of the men who was instrumental in the growth of the early church. There are two things I think are important to consider. First, Andrew found out something that the people of God had been longing to know and he didn’t keep it to himself. He discovered that Jesus was the Messiah, and he immediately told someone about it. Second, he went and told someone he cared about deeply. Both are reminders to us. We know who Jesus is and we have people we care about deeply, so we should be quick to tell them the good news about Jesus. That way, they can share in our joy and begin to follow Jesus as well.

Let us pray for the same desire to share Jesus with others and pray that God would reveal who we need to share Jesus with.
