Journey through John 8:48-59
Good Morning Church Family – Journey Through John
Read John 8:48-59
Devo Thought: Have you ever found yourself wondering about how we know for sure that Heaven is real? Have you ever found yourself wishing you could get a peek behind the curtain to see what’s really going on back there? In this passage, we actually get a little peek. It’s only a small part of the passage. Jesus is concluding this debate with the religious leaders. Things get to the point that the religious leaders pick up stones to kill Jesus and suddenly he’s gone. They have been repeatedly saying that Abraham is their father, and Jesus has repeatedly pointing out if that was true then they would believe him. Jesus tells them if they would believe in him, they would never taste death. They are enraged by this and say that Abraham and all the prophets died. “Who do you think you are?” Jesus then turns things on their head even further. “Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.” This is a huge deal. By saying this, Jesus is saying that Abraham was there with God the Father and God the Son when God the Son left heaven to come to earth in the flesh. Abraham saw the moment when the Father said to the Son that the time has come. Abraham wasn’t dead. He was alive. He was there to see the day of Jesus and was glad. There’s that little peek. It’s not much, but, man, it is powerful. Our God is a God of the living, not of the dead. Praise God that Jesus came to bring us life and life eternal!
Let us thank God that He is a God of the living.
