Journey through John 6:7-12
Good Morning Church Family – Journey Through John
Read John 6:7-12
Devo Thought: Today, we are continuing to look at the sign of the feeding of the five thousand from John’s Gospel. Last time, we talked about Jesus’ question to Philip. This time, we will look at the response of Philip and Andrew to this question. The way I want us to think about this passage is through the lens of the word perspective. Understand first that I’m not being critical of Philip’s perspective, but I believe it helps us to understand how his starting point is mistaken. Philip is a pragmatist. He looks at the situation practically and knows that they have a problem on their hands, which they lacked the means to fix. Philip sees this from the perspective of his humanity. We need a massive amount of money to fix this problem, and we don’t have it. Then, Andrew comes up and says in essence here is what we do have. “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?” Andrew’s perspective is mixed. He says they have something and brings that to Jesus, but then he lets his doubts be made known. Both Philip and Andrew are coming from a human perspective to deal with a God-sized problem. What if they had simply come to Jesus with a handful of bread and fish and said, “Lord, we found this, but with you, we know it is enough.” This is what they will come to find out. Jesus takes what they have, and He multiplies it to make it more than enough. It’s easy to criticize these disciples, but how often do we do the same thing? How often do we look at our lack and doubt instead of looking at our God and saying we will always have more than enough?
Let us ask God to help us be the type of people who know that God is able to do abundantly more than we could ever think or imagine.
