Journey through John 4:11-14
Good Morning Church Family – Journey Through John
Read John 4:11-14
Devo Thought: In this passage, we have the privilege of looking on as a divine conversation begins to unfold. Jesus has offered this Samaritan woman “living water,” and now we begin to see her response. Her responses to Him can help us to understand where so many people try to draw the water of life from. Her first response to Jesus is to point out that the well belonged to “our father Jacob.” This response is important because she is pointing to their shared family history. Why family history? She’s hinting at the fact that they come from a special family. They are Israel’s children. They are from the family that God chose so long ago. Their family got the promises, the Scriptures, the Law, the prophets. Their family’s water was more than enough for life. Jesus tells her that she’s mistaken. Drawing from that well won’t satisfy you. You’ll get thirsty again. This is true for us as well. Family history can throw us off course. It can give us a false hope. This is mindset that says my family (my parents and grandparents and their parents and grandparents) is a Christian family, so I’m good whether I really know Jesus or not. We are a good family, so I’m good with God. Family history can also poison the well. That water can bitter for us, so we avoid any water that’s related to our past. Both are mistakes. Jesus makes it clear that anyone who draws from Jacob’s well will be thirsty again, and they will have to come back again and again. Your family history, good or bad, isn’t definitive for you. You alone must decide to draw from the living water Jesus offers. Which well will you draw from?
Let us thank God for the living water from Jesus.
